Many patients with nearsightedness or farsightedness have some degree of astigmatism. Astigmatism means the shape of the cornea is not perfectly rounded, but instead has a more oval shape, like a football. One dimension of the cornea is more steeply curved than the other flatter dimension. Light entering the eye at the steeper curvature will bend more than the light entering at the flatter curvature resulting in blurred image that is more distorted or doubled. This unequal bending of light rays entering the eye causes people with astigmatism to have blurred vision for both near and distant objects.
In astigmatism, images focus in front of and beyond the retina. Close and distant objects both appear blurry.
