Presbyopia is a natural aging process that affects our ability to focus on objects close to us. As young people, the lens inside of our eyes is very elastic and we can focus easily to see small objects up close.
Eventually, almost everyone experiences the effects of presbyopia, typically between the ages of 40 and 50. Individuals in this age group experience an increasing dependence on reading glasses or bifocals, to see objects within arm’s length or closer, as they get older. Individuals in this age group need to be aware that refractive surgery is an option for changing the curvature of the cornea to focus the image of distant objects clearly on the retina. But, laser refractive surgery will not be able to change the elasticity of the lens inside the eye. Therefore these individuals may still need reading glasses to see close objects, even after the refractive surgery procedure.
